Association of the Friends of Bellanse
French uses “commune” and “arrondissement” interchangeably

Bellanse is a district of the Department of the South-East. It is bordered on the north by the communes of Fonds-Verettes, of Croix de Bouquets and of Kenscoff in the Department of the West; to the south is the Antilles sea; to the east is Grand-Gosier; to the west is Marigot.

Nestled in the foothills of the Selle mountain range, Bellanse extends from the mountains to the sea. The geographic position of Bellanse makes it vulnerable to hurricanes. Bellanse is situated in the far west of the arrondissement and is limited in terms of roads and maritime traffic.

The district is made up of four communes – Bellanse (the county seat),  Grand-Gosier, Thiotte, and Anse-à-Pitres. The commune of Bellanse has 7 rural sections – Baie d’Orange, Marbriole, Callumettes, Corail-Lamothe, Bel-Air, Pichon and Mapou. The district was formerly called Saltrou; it was legally renamed on 16 november  1960 on the recommendation of its congressman, Hugo H. Paul.

According to the most recent census taken by the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Information (IHSI), the population of the commune of Bellanse is 51,707 residents; 24,722 men and 26,984 women. Ninety-three percent (93%) of the population lives in rural areas while only 7% live in the town.

Agriculture is one of the most important source of revenue of the peasants in the rural sections of Bellanse. Fishing is another key source of revenue for the local economy, thanks to the Grande Pecherie de Bellanse (“Great Fishery of Bellanse”). Today, the presence of fisherman from the Dominican Republic in the waters off Bellanse has greatly diminished local fishing activities.
